The Rogerian model for argumentative essays is the best for mine because of the structure. I will be able to express the benefits of E85 ethanol, all the while comparing the E85 to the other alternatives that have been proposed. The fact that I can make claims and then discuss why they would not be beneficial will allow the reader to have a better understanding of the overall point of the paper. My goal is to leave the reader well-informed, and that they will know the pros and cons to each alternative fuel, and will be in agreement with me that ethanol is the “fuel of tomorrow,” and that the benefits are greater in number than any of the other possible alternative fuel sources.

With our country now in a time of great debate over global warming and securing oil for the citizens, there is much debate over what the U.S. should do. Should we continue to rely on the Middle East or should we rely on our corn farmers to supply ethanol. My opinion is absolutely! Converting to E85 (ethanol) would eliminate America’s foreign dependence for oil and would bring about thousands of jobs as there would be hundreds of E85 plants build across the country. In addition, E85 is not as pollutent as gasoline, the effect on the environment would be lowered. E85 may burn faster than gasoline, however, since the price would be significantly lowered, the pros would exceed the cons. With the U.S. also in a recession today, the creation of thousands of jobs would help many citizens, and would jump start our economy in the right direction. Although it would take some time to make a complete conversion to E85, it would certainly be beneficial in the long run.

On 6 August 1945, President Harry S. Truman knew that the world would forever be changed by his decision to institute nuclear weapons into the Allied force’s arsenal of weapons. However, he knew that it would be effective putting a swift end to World War II. The Japanese were fighting back viciously, and refused to surrender under any condition, and would fight to the death. Truman knew that the only way to inflict fear into the Japanese was to show a sign of force that was unknown to any country. Though there were around 80,000 deaths after the dropping of “Little Boy,” that’s not to say that there could have been thousands more deaths had the war waged on. By granting the executive order to drop the bomb, President Truman saved countless lives, and saved many cities from certain anihalation.

“Catchy” Advertisements are Effective with Consumers

After a company spends months or years developing their product, they then have to advertise it in a way that will be cohersive and effective. Companies spend millions of dollars on advertising yearly, and put a lot of time and work into creating their ads. Before their ad is created, the company has to identify their target market, and research that market in order to get an idea of how they (company) can be most effective in persuading the consumer to get the product. When the ad is created, it must be visually appealing and must send a message to the viewer that they should consider the product. Companies also have to ensure that the viewer will understand the ad, and will not be confused by it, otherwise they (company) risk failing to convince the consumer to purchase the product. An effective advertisement must get the point across and must be clear of what the product will do for the consumer. I wish that the product companies would put some of the money that they put into advertising back into the production of the product. By doing this, they could improve the quality of the product and let the product “speak for itself,” in the sense that it will be a great product and the word will spread about the quality and performance of it. Furthermore, I believe that consumers spend as much as they do on these products because they are “sucked in” to the potential or functions of the product, and buy it in order to fulfill their need for whatever the product is made for.

Advertsers use many methods of advertising in order to persuade potential customers to purchase their product. Advertisers work to appeal to their target market by studying what the potential customer would be persuaded by, such as beauty with women and sex appeal with men. Advertisers research the interests of their target market, and then are sure to include in the ad something that is related to the interests of the age group. Advertisers do this by studying the sales of certain products and through what the consumers in their target market view on television. For instance, AXE uses beautiful women dancing and being provactive in order to appeal to their target market, young males. With companies researching their target markets in order to appeal to the customer, it is safe to say that advertising has become a science, and that it is sure to continue to advance well into the future, and change according to the potential customers’ interests.

Unilever is successful with AXE advertising

Unilever is successful in its advertising for the ever-popular AXE bacause they effectively use sex appeal in order to persuade consumers to purchase it. With the target market being young males, they know that they have to advertise the product with beautiful women in order to make a lasting impact on the consumer. They use the same marketing tactics as Nike, Under Armour, etc. Nike advertises Lebron James wearing his signature LBJ 23 shoes. When the consumer sees this, they then want to be like the celebrity, so they get the shoes. In essence, they visualize themeselves playing like Lebron if they wear the shoes, and if Lebron wears the shoes, then they must be good. Lebron is undoubtebly one of the best players ever in the National Basketball Association, and wearing the same shoes as the a great such a Lebron is a feeling of successfulness and athleticism. Under Armour does the same. When a perspective buyer sees the commercials, they also want to have women chasing them, so they purchase the product in hopes of it paying dividends in the future. I don’t necessarily agree with these advertising tactics, but I know that it is a competitive market and these measures must be taken in order for a product to be profitable. The companies have to appeal to the target market’s desires. By creating commercials that deal with the product and the potentials of purchasing the product, they are more likely to succeed in persuading the consumer to buy the product.

After reading Barry Glassner’s article, Why Americans Fear the Wrong Things,I found myself to be in total agreement. Glassner does a wonderful job of proving that the media causes the citizens to compound problems into much larger ones. Glassner provided one example that summed it all up. Their had been isolated incidents of “flesh-eating bugs (bugs that would feed on human flesh. The scientific name is necrotizing fasciitis). However, the media portrayed the incidents as being much worse than it was, therefore causing many people to have constant fears of the so-called “flesh-eating bugs.” The British tabloid reported that every citizen was “terribly vulnerable” to these “superbugs.” The actual number affected by the bugs was about 500 to 1500 people, much less than the tabloids reported (everybody). I agree with Glassner that the media misreports information and causes panic over something that is not likely to occur. It is my personal opinion that the media makes things sound worse than they really are in order to improve their sales. By making situations more dramatic, the consumers are more likely to purchase the newspaper. For example, when a tabloid hears of an argument between a celebrity married couple, they may report it as the husband or wife demanding a divorce or separation, or one of the two having an affair. Unfortunately, we are deprived of the real facts because the news gathers are choosing to make money, instead of report the news as it really is.
